Welcome to Hawaii!&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Departing from the Volcanoes National Park and its impressive lava flows was difficult, so before heading back to Kailua-Kona we had breakfast at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaiivolcanohouse.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Volcano House<\/strong><\/a> to admire the <strong>volc\u00e1n Kilauea<\/strong>&nbsp;through the large window of the restaurant for the last time. (See VIDEO <a href=\"https:\/\/test.azultourquesa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Kilauea-Volcano.mov\"><strong>Kilauea Volcano<\/strong><\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/test.azultourquesa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Kilauea-5-e1497853504276.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3993\" src=\"https:\/\/test.azultourquesa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Kilauea-5-e1497853504276.jpg\" alt=\"parque nacional de los volcanes - haw\u00e1i\" width=\"450\" height=\"600\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Then we made a brief stop at the <strong>Lava Tube<\/strong>We walked through the lush rainforest to explore a 500-year-old lava tube. The path is less than half a mile long.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>The Painted Church<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The next stop was <strong>St. Benedict\u2019s Catholic Church,<\/strong> (Saint Benedict\u2019s Catholic Church) <strong>better known as<\/strong> <strong>The Painted Church <\/strong>(The Painted Church), <strong>because of the beautiful frescoes that decorate its interior walls.<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/test.azultourquesa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Painted-Church-1-e1498113722562.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4056\" src=\"https:\/\/test.azultourquesa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Painted-Church-1-e1498113722562.jpg\" alt=\"capit\u00e1n cook y la iglesia pintada - haw\u00e1i\" width=\"450\" height=\"675\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Nestled on the slopes of Mauna Loa overlooking Kealakekua Bay, the Painted Church was built between 1899 and 1902 under the direction of a Belgian Catholic Missionary, Father John Velghe, who depicted on his walls various biblical scenes.<\/p>\n<p>Without any professional training as an artist, Father Velghe embellished the walls with his paintings, at a time when few Hawaiians could read and write. His paintings helped him to literate and evangelize the Hawaiians.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/test.azultourquesa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Painted-Church-2-e1498113740525.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4057\" src=\"https:\/\/test.azultourquesa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Painted-Church-2-e1498113740525.jpg\" alt=\"capit\u00e1n cook y la iglesia pintada - haw\u00e1i\" width=\"450\" height=\"600\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Designed as <strong>a miniature European Gothic cathedral,<\/strong>this small parish is listed on the National Register of Historic Places in the United States for its historical value.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Mar Twain Monkey Pod Tree<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Before we arrived at The Painted Church we stopped in the small town of Waiohinu to admire the famous Mark Twain Monkey Pod Tree. In 1866, the American writer visited Hawaii, rented a horse and spent three months riding the island and sending his letters to the Sacramento <em>Sacramento Daily Union newspaper.<\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4061\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4061\" style=\"width: 900px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/test.azultourquesa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Mark-Twain-Tree-e1498114389900.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4061\" src=\"https:\/\/test.azultourquesa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Mark-Twain-Tree-e1498114389900.jpg\" alt=\"captain cook - haw\u00e1i\" width=\"900\" height=\"602\"\/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4061\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mark Twain Monkey Pod Tree. But <strong>it\u2019s worth stopping and reflecting on the site where one of America\u2019s most beloved writers was 150 years ago.<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4062\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4062\" style=\"width: 900px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/test.azultourquesa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Mark-Twain-Tree-2-e1498114405878.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4062\" src=\"https:\/\/test.azultourquesa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Mark-Twain-Tree-2-e1498114405878.jpg\" alt=\"captain cook - haw\u00e1i\" width=\"900\" height=\"689\"\/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4062\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mark Twain Monkey Pod Tree. Mamalahoa Hwy, Mountain View, Haw\u00e1i. <a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/67d8Xe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">(Source)<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Twain mentions his passage through the island in a letter published in the Sacramento Daily Union on October 25, 1866: <em>Sacramento Daily Union<\/em> el 25 de octubre de 1866:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201c\u2026 In this rainy spot trees and flowers flourish luxuriantly, and three of those trees \u2013 two mangoes and an orange \u2013 will live in my memory as the greenest, freshest and most beautiful I ever saw\u2026\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Captain Cook<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The return trip promised more adventures in Captain Cook, a true oasis for snorkeling. <strong>Marine animal life is in its splendor in this place to the southwest of the island.<\/strong>You can see dolphins, stingrays and tropical fish. What and end for Captain Cook!<\/p>\n<h3><strong><em>Day 14 \u2013 Pictures with Captain Jack and lunch at Jackie Rey\u2019s<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Back in Kailua-Kona that morning we decided to walk along the boardwalk, sip a cup of coffee, and take pictures with Captain Jack.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/test.azultourquesa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Captain-Jack-e1498120731595.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4080\" src=\"https:\/\/test.azultourquesa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Captain-Jack-e1498120731595.jpg\" alt=\"capit\u00e1n jack - haw\u00e1i\" width=\"450\" height=\"450\"\/><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>A carved wooden sculpture of the smiling Captain Jack decorates the small plaza on Waterfront Row.<\/strong>A nearby plaque tells the story of how he was shipwrecked during a storm and rescued by local fishermen. Now, Captain Jack takes the Hawaiian sun on a bench just below the watchtower and welcomes visitors with a cordial: \u201cAhoy Mates!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We had lunch at the popular <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jackiereys.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Jackie Rey\u2019s Ohana Grill<\/strong><\/a>. Their great variety of salads, pastas, meats, fresh fish and a wide range of national and international wines left us satisfied. Everything we ordered was delicious!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/test.azultourquesa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Jackie-Reys-e1498120801517.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4082\" src=\"https:\/\/test.azultourquesa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Jackie-Reys-e1498120801517.jpg\" alt=\"jackie rey's - haw\u00e1i\" width=\"900\" height=\"586\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Established in 2004, Jackie Rey\u2019s is named after the owners\u2019 daughter, who founded it in 2004. Its casual and family atmosphere makes it enjoyable for children and adults alike. A new branch of the same restaurant was opened in Hilo in 2016.<\/p>\n<h3><strong><em>Day 15 \u2013 Goodbye to Hawaii<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The last day was to rest and say goodbye to Big Island.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/test.azultourquesa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Pool-e1498120761312.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4081\" src=\"https:\/\/test.azultourquesa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Pool-e1498120761312.jpg\" alt=\"big island, haw\u00e1i\" width=\"900\" height=\"581\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After packing, we spent much of the afternoon in the pool of the house where we stayed. We had to be at the airport in the evening.
